Harmonic
Experience: Tonal Harmony from its Natural Origins to
its Modern Expression Inner
Traditions International Ltd., September 1997 by W.A. Mathieu Click
Here to Order
An exploration of musical harmony from its ancient fundamentals
to its most complex modern progressions, addressing how
and why it resonates emotionally and spiritually in the
individual. W. A. Mathieu, an accomplished author and
recording artist, presents a way of learning music that
reconnects modern-day musicians with the source from which
music was originally generated. As the author states,
"The rules of music--including counterpoint and harmony--were
not formed in our brains but in the resonance chambers
of our bodies." His theory of music reconciles the
ancient harmonic system of just intonation with the modern
system of twelve-tone temperament. Saying that the way
we think music is far from the way we do music, Mathieu
explains why certain combinations of sounds are experienced
by the listener as harmonious. His prose often resembles
the rhythms and cadences of music itself, and his many
musical examples allow readers to discover their own musical
responses.

Tones of Music Morris Publishing,
2004
Maria McKinney, D.M.A. Click
Here to Order
In working with music therapy Dr. McKinney has clarified
the importance of understanding the holistic viewpoint
that a human consists of the triad connection: body, mind
and spirit. It is harmonious integration that makes us
happy and healthy. With rare exception, classical music
brings us this integration. In Dr. McKinney's research
at Casa de Maria Research Center, she took into consideration
the composer's own known ailments or disharmony. For example,
Wagner exhibited fear. His music was therapeutic for his
own ailment and is therapeutic for those who have mental
disorders, fear or paranoia. Beethoven had a deep sadness,
an alone-ness. His music is therapeutic for those who
have a poor image, or suffer from self-imposed isolation.
The book gives new information regarding the transformative
power of music.

The
Singing Neanderthals Harvard
University Press, October, 2007 by Steven Mithen
Click
Here to Order Music is the language of emotion,
common wisdom tells us. In The Singing Neanderthals, Mithen
introduces us to the science that might support such popular
notions. With equal parts scientific rigor and charm,
he marshals current evidence about social organization,
tool and weapon technologies, hunting and scavenging strategies,
habits and brain capacity of all our hominid ancestors,
from australopithecines to Homo erectus, Homo heidelbergensis
and Neanderthals to Homo sapiens--and comes up with a
scenario for a shared musical and linguistic heritage.
Along the way he weaves a tapestry of cognitive and expressive
worlds--alive with vocalized sound, communal mimicry,
sexual display, and rhythmic movement--of various species.

The
Effect of Music on Heart Activity VDM
Verlag, April, 2008 by Martin Morgenstern Click
Here to Order Under public concert conditions,
the heart rate of a musical performer increases significantly
when compared with that in a rehearsal situation. Previous
studies have examined this effect, attributing a higher
heart rate in performances to the effects of mental stress
and performance anxiety. However, the actual physical
work load had to be neglected in these studies, because
it appears to be impossible to quantify physiological
involvement while playing music. This book investigates
the basic physiological and psychological processes that
take place during a performance by investigating the heart
activity of performers during performance, rest and listening
phases, and correlating the acquired data to synchronous
acoustic recordings. This book also shows that the occurrence
of special cardiac events such as VES and SVES generally
correlate with musically demanding moments.
