Music
and the Power of Sound: The Influence of Tuning and Interval
on Consciousness Inner Traditions
Intl Ltd, December 1995 by
Alain Danielou Click
Here to Order Danielou
was a Frenchman who spent two decades in India studying
the vina. This book, a revision of the 1946 "Introduction
to Musical Scales," compares the basic scale structures
of India, China, and ancient Greece, relating each to
the philosophical worldview of its parent culture. In
a nutshell, he finds Chinese and Indian music to be equally
profound but utterly dissimilar, and Greek music to be
a confused merging of the two. Modern Western music, because
it is based on the flawed Greek system, he finds decadent--capable
of moving the listener, but only by overcomplicated means
in comparison especially to the directness of Indian classical
music.

book details how sound-based therapies play an instrumental
role in the successful treatment of the symptoms related
to autism, apraxia, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, hyperlexia, Central
Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD), and learning disorders,
and is a guide toward achieving one's maximal potential
for development and wellness. Despite years of practice
and the evolution of various versions of sound therapies,
the quintessential missing element has been the lack of
a set protocol to follow. By distinguishing the differences
between sound therapies, Sound Bodies through Sound Therapy
sets the framework for the application of an effective
therapeutic program.

The
Nature of Music: Beauty, Sound and Healing Riverhead Trade, November 2001 by Maureen McCarthy Draper Click
Here to Order The Nature
of Music is both a primer on how, when, and why to listen
to music, and an exploration of how music mirrors the
natural impulses of our minds, psyches, bodies, and souls-our
physical and emotional rhythms. Maureen McCarthy Draper,
a classical pianist, writes about the ways in which the
great works of the classical canon can help us cope with
grief, give dimension to the mysteries of beauty and faith,
aid us in recovery from illness, inspire us to create,
help us know ourselves better, or just give us a boost
of energy.
Draper has also amassed an invaluable musical bibliography
of more than 170 works to help us integrate music into
everyday life. From it we can create our own listening
list for work, play, sex or meditation. Using music as
both a metaphor and a medium, Draper illuminates the living,
breathing dimensions of the masterpieces that have endured
for centuries, and celebrates the countless gifts that
have endured for centuries, and celebrates the countless
gifts that music has to offer when we listen with imagination
and engaged hearts.
Cognitive
Ecology II University Of Chicago Press, November
2009 by Reuven Dukas and John M. Ratcliffe Click
Here to Order This book integrates numerous scientific
disciplines to analyze the ecology and evolution of animal
cognition. The contributors cover the mechanisms, ecology,
and evolution of learning and memory, including detailed
analyses of bee neurobiology, bird song, and spatial learning.
They also explore decision making, with mechanistic analyses
of reproductive behavior in voles, escape hatching by
frog embryos, and predation in the auditory domain of
bats and eared insects.
Finally, they consider social cognition, focusing on alarm
calls and the factors determining social learning strategies
of corvids, fish, and mammals. With cognitive ecology
ascending to its rightful place in behavioral and evolutionary
resercy, this volume captures the promise that has been
realized in the past decade and looks forward to new research
projects.
