About Amrita - Founder of The Healing Music Organization

History of the Healing Music Organization

In September, 1999, Amrita Cottrell gave birth to this beautiful organization just after healing from her miraculous healing from breast cancer. The Healing Music Organization was born out of her love for music, and the excitement over the incredible healing she experienced in combining sound and intention. It has been an amazing experience to have a vision and bring it into manifestation through sheer will and the grace of God. It is her sincere desire for this website to be a comprehensive source of information and a working resource for those who want to learn more about the science and art of vibrational medicine (also known as psychoacoustics), sound healing and music therapy.

The internet has become an important tool to Amrita over the years since her amazing miracle of healing. Much of her research about cancer and wellness issues was done via the internet since access to large libraries wasn't readily available in Hawaii where she lived at the time she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

When she conducted research and literature searches in the area of sound healing and music therapy, she discovered that there didn't seem to be one source that really covered the wide-spectrum of information existing about sound healing. At the time Amrita realized that interest in sound and healing through music was quickly spreading as more and more are people were becoming aware of its power. There wasn't any one place that bridged the gap between science, sound, music, sound healing and music therapy and all the many specialties of working with sound and vibration.

Amrita decided to create a website as a comprehensive resource for disseminating this information worldwide. She says that she loves performing, recording and working with people one-on-one and in groups, but that the internet gives her the ability to inspire large groups of people simultaneously.

The Healing Music Organization advocates no one specific modality, but presents all possibilities for those who want to learn. We do not feel that sound and music should be a substitute for seeking the advise of a medical practitioner. We do, however, believe that sound can always assist you in your healing journey.

The information on this website is for your use. Please feel free to access it and share it. We ask that if something has a reference, that you respect those who have taken the time to make it available and give them credit.

Our intention is to provide a website that gives people extensive, interesting, and up-to-date information in a pleasing format. If you visit us regularly (and we hope you will), you will notice changes over the next few months. Join our Healing Music egroup to keep abreast of what people from around the world are doing and saying in the area of sound healing by requesting membreship. Please send us emails if you want to give us suggestions about the design and content of the website as well as any technical problems you may encounter as you traverse our site.

Mission Statement

The Healing Music Organization provides information, resources, tools and a forum for dialogue to people interested in the healing power of music and sound. The Healing Music Organization serves as a bridge between the worlds of spirituality and medicine by honoring the value of both modalities. We support the concept of miracles in healing when the spirit and body learn to harmonize together and resonate with the vast energy of the universe.

The Healing Music Organization supports the concepts of entrainment, harmonics and resonance in serving a vital role in bringing body, mind and emotions into alignment with a person's spiritual essence. This alignment allows the opportunity for experiencing deep healing, a sense of lasting wholeness and continued wellness.

The Healing Music Organization furthers the work of visionaries, researchers, scholars, artists, historians, healers, and those seeking healing as we move into a new paradigm. May we access the ancient wisdom of the universe, through intuition, by becoming still, listening to and resonating with the vibrations within our being, and allowing the flow of synchronicity with the world around us.

About Amrita - Founder of The Healing Music Organization

Amrita is a classically trained vocal musician, and has been fascinated by the mind/body/spirit connection for over thirty years. She became interested in the possibility of self-healing after suffering a severe spinal chord injury at the age of eighteen, from which she recovered fully.

Amrita began her sound healing work in May, 1999, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in two years. She knew that "conventional treatment" was not the path for her the second time, so she began her journey into sound healing based on her own inner guidance. By using her voice, the voice of her partner and various healing instruments over the next two months, she was able to eradicate two tumors much to the astonishment of her physician.

Amrita studied theology and music at seminary over twenty years ago and then received her B.A. in Health Arts and Sciences from Goddard College in Vermont in 2001 as an independent scholar. She focused her studies on Sound Healing and Vibrational Medicine. Amrita created a pilot study which investigated the issue of grief—how grief manifests in the human experience; how sound and music can assist people in expressing grief in a healthy way, and how the sounds in nature may provide the tones and rhythms to help people in their grief process. The study was impressive and the findings were intriguing. It is Amrita's intention to create a full study in the near future, and she is seeking funding for this study. Please contact Amrita if you are interested in learning more about this interesting study.

Amrita has just completed her first two books, "The Encyclopedia of Sound: A Researcher's Guide to Sound and Music in the Healing Arts and Sciences" and "The Dictionary of Sound: The Dictionary of Sound: A Practical Glossary of Sound and Music in the Healing Arts and Sciences." These are being published now and will be availble for sale in January, 2007. If you would like to be notified when these are available, please send us an email, and we will put you on a mailing list for an announcement. She is also writing a book called "Graceful Amazon", which chronicles her experience in healing from breast cancer. Amrita is writing a book called "The Chantnal" with her colleague, Peggy Black, that compiles the work of over 50 of the top sound healers from around the world in their work with chanting and vocal exercises.

Amrita uses the crystal bowls, bells, chimes, drums and rattles along with her healing voice in working with individuals and groups. She also presents workshops around the country on the healing power of sound and music. Amrita is on the faculty at California Institute of Psychoacoustics in San Francisco and Vox Mundi School in Emeryville, California. Learn more about Amrita's healing work.

Music without words means leaving behind the mind. And leaving behind the mind is meditation.
Meditation returns you to the source. And the source of all is sound. — Kabir
